Can we talk location? One of the most important things to consider before you sign up for a craft show/event is the location of the event. Many craft shows and events are at venues that are not going to draw a crowd for various reasons. If you are not familiar with the location, we recommend you drive by to scope it out. Then answer these questions or ask the event coordinator:
Is there ample free parking or is it metered? Lots of free parking is going to be a better draw for attendees since nobody wants to drive around the block multiple times looking for a spot or worry about feeding the meter. Also, check out the parking lot, is it level and marked or is it full of garbage and junk that will drive folks away for fear they will mess up their car or hurt themselves?
How do you access the building? Are there multiple entrance/exit points? If yes, where are they located? For the public, there is usually one main entrance but find out if there is a second access location for loading & unloading your wares for the show. Perhaps they have a loading dock around back or a service elevator you can use as a vendor. **If the only access to the building is up flights of stairs, be wary. You will put yourself at risk for injury lugging items up and down the steps and attendees may not want to climb flights of steps to visit.
Is it handicap accessible? Visitors should be able to enter/exit easily.
Is it easy to locate/highly visible? If a location is easy to find and/or visible from the main street you will have more opportunity to draw in foot traffic. If GPS cannot locate the venue, neither will customers.
Is it an evening event? Go by later in the evening and make sure the lot has lights and it is easy to see where you are going.
Make sure check out the venue prior to reserving your space. Do your research so you are not wasting money! Remember there are NO guarantees for these kind of events and the best location in the world can still result in ZERO sales.
